A Wooden Debit Card is a Sustainable Alternative to Plastic Cards

The card isn’t just a pretty thing to look at; it’s a functional, sustainable alternative to plastic cards. “A lot of gift cards are going to go to waste, unused by consumers and end up in landfills,” said Kaijser.

It makes sense to try and produce them more sustainably, especially when you consider that deforestation is one of the leading contributors to climate change.

Wooden Debit Card

A wooden debit card is a new way for consumers to make a positive impact on the environment. It’s made from cherry tree wood and recycled plastic bottle waste. It works just like a plastic card, except it is completely recyclable and can be used at ATMs and in all sorts of other transactions.

The card is free and supports a range of different payment methods, including chip and PIN and contactless payments, as well as digital wallets such as Apple Pay or Android Pay. It also enables split bills and lets users track spending.

It operates over the Mastercard network, and uses back-end card processing services from Synapse. It also functions as a full-fledged debit account, receiving top-ups from a user’s regular bank account.

Consumers can use the app to categorise their spending, split bills with friends and monitor how many trees Wood Card have been planted as a result of their spending. The app is linked to a prepaid card that acts as a fully-fledged debit account, accepting top-ups from a user’s bank account and supporting chip and PIN, mobile payments and contactless transactions.

Founded by four Londoners and seed-funded by ecosia, the search engine that plants trees, TreeCard will use 80% of profits to plant trees worldwide. It will also charge a small transaction fee to merchants, who can then choose to redirect the money to reforestation projects, as long as they’re run by a non-profit.

This makes it easier for consumers to contribute to reforestation projects around the world and helps counteract climate change. By 2026, the company aims to plant a billion trees.

TreeCard is currently available for use in the USA and some EU markets. It has raised $23 million in a series A funding round led by US VC Valar Ventures, climate tech VC World Fund and EQT, with participation from Seedcamp, Episode 1 and a couple of business angels.

TreeCard’s co-founder and CEO Jamie Cox said: “We believe if there is a button that can make people more sustainable, then they will press it.” This round of funding will help the fintech grow its headcount to double as the company prepares to launch in European letter boxes next year.
