Steps

Each step has two sets of wheels that roll on separate tracks, the upper set connected to a mover chain that pulls it along, and the lower ones attached to another wheel track that keeps the tread horizontal. This ensures that the steps never sway side to side while in motion.

They have cleats on their leading and trailing edges that mesh with the comb plates on the top and bottom landing platforms, and are arranged in pairs that rise and fall in a sequence to make descending easier. A typical escalator includes an endless handrail 10, a machine room 50, a plurality of connected steps 51, a main frame 52, a drive machine 57, and panels 58. The main frame is bridged between adjacent upper and lower floors and supports the weight of the escalator itself and the passenger load. The main shaft 56 transmits the driving power to the steps through a drive chain.

Truss
